Mount Jackson is a town in Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,994 at the 2010 census.

Town is easily identified from I-81 exit 273 by the water tower painted as a basket of apples.

Geography

Mount Jackson is located at in the southern part of Shenandoah County, Virginia at (38.749950, -78.637638).[3] The town is located just to the west of Short Mountain, a prominent peak of the Massanutten Mountain Ridge.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,664 people, 667 households, and 440 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,353.7 people per square mile (522.3/km²). There were 718 housing units at an average density of 584.1 per square mile (225.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 87.74% White, 0.66% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 9.68% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.12% of the population.

There were 667 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $32,471, and the median income for a family was $39,423. Males had a median income of $29,464 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,004. About 7.1% of families and 10.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under age 18 and 16.3% of those age 65 or over.
